Part 1.
Knowledge Assessment

Part 2.
Practical Assessment

Final Assessment

You have now completed the knowledge content and activities for TEST302 Calibrate Testing Equipment and Assist with its Maintenance. You may undertake the assessment if you are ready or review the material in this unit again.

To be recognised as competent in this unit you must be assessed in both the knowledge content and the workplace skills. The assessment is in two parts, part one asks you to apply the knowledge you have acquired in the unit and part two is a practical assessment.

Part 1. Knowledge Assessment

As a Laboratory Technician at SimuLab Laboratories you have set up and calibrated the optical microscope, analytical balance, pH meter and spectrophotometer. You have also assisted with equipment maintenance and maintaining records for the equipment. In this final assessment you will investigate similar processes in your own work environment or training laboratory.
The following activity is designed to test your understanding of calibration, equipment maintenance and record keeping. It is based on your own working/training environment.
Send the finished assessment to your tutor.
  1. Choose one piece of laboratory equipment which you have used that has NOT been used in this competency (ie do not use the optical microscope, analytical balance, pH meter or the spectrophotometer).

Base the choice on your own experience (if possible). Describe the following aspects of the equipment:

    • name and function of equipment (eg pH meter, measures acidity/alkalinity of aqueous solutions)
    • basic working mechanism (eg pH meter uses an electrochemical detector to measure protons in aqueous solution)
    • what you have used the equipment for (eg measure pH of cola drinks during production).
  1. In your own words, list and describe the following:

    • Pre-use and Set-up Checks
    • Safety Checks (if not described above)
    • calibration process.
  1. In your own words describe:

    • common difficulties experienced in setting up and calibrating this equipment
    • examples of two problems you have experienced with the use of this equipment
    • how you resolved these problems.
  1. Describe routine maintenance associated with the use of this equipment.

  2. Describe the care, siting and storage requirements for this piece of equipment.

  3. Describe the record keeping associated with the use of this equipment.

  4. Describe how you were trained to use this equipment.

Part 2. Practical Assessment

Practical assessment requires you to demonstrate the competency on-the-job (or in a simulated laboratory).

The assessment will consist of:
  • a demonstration of the competency in an on-the-job situation or a simulation
  • oral questioning about such things as laboratory specific knowledge of processes, troubleshooting and
  • questioning related to specific safety or other factors that may be peculiar to the learner's work environment
  • any relevant workplace documents that support the assessment.
If you are ready to undertake the practical assessment send a message to your tutor using the mail facility.
