Part 1.
Knowledge Assessment

Part 2.
Practical Assessment

Final Assessment

You have now completed the knowledge content and activities for TEST400 Perform Instrumental Tests/Procedures. You may undertake the assessment if you are ready or review the material in this unit again.

To be recognised as competent in this unit you must be assessed in both the knowledge content and the workplace skills. The assessment is in two parts, part one is a knowledge assessment and part two is a practical assessment.

Part 1. Knowledge Assessment

This final assessment will test your understanding of instrumental procedures at SimuLab using the pH meter, HPLC and Spectrophotometer. You may use any and all of the information contained in this unit of competency or other units of competency in this online delivery package.

The exercises in the following activity are designed to test your understanding of instrumental procedures. They are based on the information contained in this unit of competency.

Test your understanding of instrumental procedures by answering the following questions and doing the following exercises. Send the finished assessment to your tutor.

  1. Choose one piece of laboratory equipment that has NOT been used in this competency (ie do not use the pH meter, HPLC or the spectrophotometer). The piece of equipment you choose does not need to be complex.

Base the choice on other units of competency in this Toolbox, or your own experience in practical classes or employment. Describe the following aspects of the equipment:

    • name and function of equipment (eg pH meter, measures acidity/alkalinity of aqueous solutions)
    • basic working mechanism (eg pH meter uses an electrochemical detector to measure protons in aqueous solution)
    • how samples are prepared for analysis
    • how the sample is tested.

  2. In your own words list and describe the following for the SimuLab HPLC:

    • Pre-Use and Set-Up Checks
    • Safety Checks
    • Calibration process.

  3. In your own words describe any of the following problems that you have encountered using analytical instruments:

    • difficulties experienced in setting up and calibrating equipment
    • examples of two problems you have experienced with the use of equipment
    • how you resolved these problems.

  4. Describe routine maintenance associated with the use of the SimuLab spectrophotometer.

  5. How would you improve the record keeping associated with the use of the SimuLab pH meter?

  6. Describe how the SimuLab waste disposal system at SimuLab could be improved.
Send this information to your tutor.

Part 2. Practical Assessment

Practical assessment requires you to demonstrate the competency on-the-job (or in a simulated laboratory).

The assessment will consist of:

  • a demonstration of the competency in an on-the-job situation or a simulation
  • oral questioning about such things as laboratory specific knowledge of processes, troubleshooting and
  • questioning related to specific safety or other factors that may be peculiar to the learner's work environment
  • any relevant workplace documents that support the assessment.

If you are ready to undertake the practical assessment send a message to your tutor using the mail facility.
