Part 1.
Knowledge Assessment

Part 2.
Practical Assessment

You have now completed the knowledge content and activities for TEST402 Prepare, Standardise and Use Solutions. You may undertake the assessment if you are ready or review the material in this unit again.

To be recognised as competent in this unit you must be assessed in both the knowledge content and the workplace skills. The assessment is in two parts, part one is a scenario that asks you to apply the knowledge you have acquired in the unit and part two is a practical assessment.

Part 1. Knowledge Assessment

This is designed to test your understanding of the previous four tasks and your ability to integrate your knowledge of solutions and concentrations.

Today you have been asked to determine the amount of ammonia in a cleaning solution. Samples of this solution have been sent to SimuLab and Max asks you to determine the amount of ammonia by titration. He gives you the samples and the SOP: Determination of Ammonia by Titration with Sulfuric Acid.
Read the SOP after clicking on the link below.
GoTo SOP: Determination of Ammonia by Titration with Sulfuric Acid

After reading the SOP you prepare for the titration by collecting the equipment and reagents you require. Collect your equipment and reagents by clicking on the link below.

Activity Activity: Collecting Equipment and Reagents - Ammonia

For your next task you carry out the titration as per the SOP: Determination of Ammonia by Titration with Sulfuric Acid and the following results are recorded on the Laboratory Test Sheet.

Titration readings 1 2 3
Final reading 22.54 44.95 27.19
Initial reading 0.00 22.54 4.76
Titre volume 22.54 22.41 22.43
  1. Which two results are concordant?

  2. Explain why the initial reading in Reading 3 is not 44.95.

  3. From the results calculate the concentration of ammonia in the cleaning solution to two decimal places.

  4. Estimate the error factor for each titre volume given that the error for a burette is ± 0.02 mL. Remember you make two readings to obtain the titre volume.

Send this information to your tutor.

Part 2. Practical Assessment

Practical assessment requires you to demonstrate the competency on-the-job (or in a simulated laboratory).

The assessment will consist of:
  • a demonstration of the competency in an on-the-job situation or a simulation
  • oral questioning about such things as laboratory specific knowledge of processes, troubleshooting and
  • questioning related to specific safety or other factors that may be peculiar to the learner's work environment
  • any relevant workplace documents that support the assessment.

If you are ready to undertake the practical assessment send a message to your tutor using the mail facility.
