Step 4. Maintaining the Biotechnology Laboratory

Many of the activities involved in biotechnological laboratory procedures require activities to maintain the laboratory in an operational manner. These activities may include the:

  • establishment and use of a DNA reference database and the storage of information on this database

  • storage of reagents, especially very sensitive reagents such as restriction enzymes
Storage cupboard for flammable/ reactive chemicals.
  • storage of samples

  • selection and development of positive and negative controls for DNA gels

  • use of quarantine procedures, if appropriate, and
Samples and reagents stored in the refrigerator.
  • applying disposal methods for biological samples such as blood, semen, hair, skin, nails, other tissues and organs, as well as whole animals.
Biological hazard disposal containers.

SimuLab have a number of SOPs relating to general laboratory safety issues and some of these cover some aspects of biotechnology. These SOPs are listed in the Methods Manual and the OHS Manual.

Go to the Resources and Training Room and look in the Methods Manual and the OHS Manual. Make a copy of all the SOPs that relate to the following topics:

  • Laboratory safety
  • Disinfection
  • Sample Storage
  • Housekeeping
  • Spills
  • Wastes

Handy Hint: you should have seven SOPs to work with.

Click on the following link to make your way to the Resources and Training Room to locate the SOPs.
