Part 1: Distribute and maintain the quality framework

Michael Leetonvale

You have just recently been appointed to the senior position of Laboratory Supervisor within the SimuLab Minerals laboratory. Over the last couple of weeks, you have been hearing rumours that NATA auditors are due soon to conduct their usual laboratory assessment. Like most laboratory staff you don't look forward to the audits but they are a must if the laboratory wants to maintain its accreditation. With your new job you haven't had time to think of audits; you've been too busy getting used to your new responsibilities.

You are now in charge of three groups within the Mineral Laboratory: the Metals Group; the Fire Assay Group; and the Sample Preparation Group. Even though the new job came with a nice salary increase, you now have much greater responsibilities, but you are enjoying the challenge that each day brings.

Mornings are usually a very busy time and as you scan your emails you see one from Quentin Allamby, the Quality Assurance Manager, headed 'NATA Assessment'. You open it hoping that it's not going to add too much extra work to your already full load.

Looks like you have been given a bit of extra work that you really could have done without!

You realise as Quentin pointed out in his email that you have a good opportunity to show your new team the quality system and ensure that the staff do things the way they should be done.
